Girls Who Code

Club at Southwest OKC Library wraps up May 12th

The STEAM Engine partnered with the Southwest OKC Library to facilitate a Girls Who Code club for girls in 6th-12th grade. At the Library's request, our project had a mental health focus. We completed the first six weeks of the club in-person at the library. After Spring Break, we completed the final eight weeks using Zoom.

For the first six weeks of program, we followed the curriculum of the national Girls Who Code organization--
  • learning how to find a shared project focus via dot voting;
  • conducting online research using credible sources;
  • casting a vision using a vision board;
  • setting individual and shared SMART goals;
  • creating a "to do" list and organizing it on a Kanban board; and
  • creating a wireframe of our collective project.

Each week we learned about a "Woman in Tech" through a short video spotlight and the girls completed project Tutorials in their chosen platform (Scratch, Trinket, and Python). After taking our program "virtual", we pivoted our to focus on creating a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure game in Scratch. Each girl created her own game, each with a mental health focus.

The program ran from February 4 - May 12, 2020.

Choose-Your-Own-Adventure

Here are the completed projects that our students wanted to share publicly. At the request of Pioneer Library System, each project has a "mental health" focus to support the year's PLS Reads Initiative.

To play each game, simply press the "green flag" in the upper left-hand corner.
